Description
The March of the Women is the first comprehensive analysis of the campaign for women's suffrage to appear for thirty years. It offers a fresh perspective on the militant and non-militant tactics used by the suffragettes, and shows how they gradually convinced the entrenched all-male Members of Parliament of the validity of their cause by the outbreak of the First World War.

What a fantastic analysis of the difficulties and complexities of driving social change. It basically took Britain 60 years to accept and implement womens (and universal) suffrage. And it was anything but a straight forward campaign. For anyone interested in social campaigns and how they are won this book is a great read.I particularly enjoyed the story of the anti-suffragists, both the men and the women. The hilarious contradition of women flocking to join political and social groups to campaign agianst women being given political rights. Just a hoot!I bought this book as I suddenly realised what a major change the womens suffrage campaign was in all of human history. Sure NZ and Australia crused in early, but the change was more difficult and more significant in the UK where long-established values and interests had to evolve. The writing style is a bit academic and dry, but the range of amazing and bizarre characters carries you through the story.A great read. Thoroughly recommend it.
